25th Worldwide SketchCrawl: Los Angeles

The Los Angeles version of 25th Worldwide SketchCrawl had light attendance because it was also the same day as CTN Animation Expo, where usual Sketchcrawlers went instead. A group of us was at the lobby area of the conference center that held the Expo to sketch animators and artists who were there. I saw a classic animation table on display, and a costume model who was dressed as a pirate.

I then walk across the street to Bob Hope Airport. It's a small regional airport, so I was able to get close to the terminal area to watch the planes take off. I found a parking structure across the street, with a good view of an airplane being serviced. As I was drawing the plane, it backed out onto the tarmac and slowly rolled away. It was a beautiful day!

Illustration Friday: Music

This is a "jam session" of all the musician sketches I did this year, and I thought it was appropriate for this week's IF theme, "Music". It was fun to remember the type of music each musician played, which ranged from funky rock to Australian aboriginal tunes.

Los Angeles Food Truck: Dosa Truck

Dosa Truck sells Indian food - colorful graphics caught my "eye". When I sketch cars, I tend to think of them as "creatures", and I struggle to capture their "gesture" - the eyes on this truck made it even more life-like! I tried a samosa, a traditional dish stuffed with potatoes that is filling and satisfying:

Food Truck Sketch: Lomo Arigato

Lomo Arigato is a food truck that serves Peruvian-Japanese food. I ordered lomo saltado, which is a traditional Peruvian-style stir-fried dish served with rice. It was neat to see flames go up inside the truck when the chef was firing up the wok to flash-fry the food!

The dish looked like this:

Midwest Airlines article on Urban Sketchers

I am honored to be a Los Angeles correspondent and a board member for Urban Sketchers, which is an artists' blog network that celebrated its 1st anniversary. Midwest Airlines wrote an article about us for their in-flight magazine, MyMidwest, and my sketch was chosen to open the article in a very pleasing page layout that sums up what we do - you can click on the image above to read about why I like to sketch, and visit this Urban Sketchers link to see more sketches by fellow Urban Sketcher correspondents.
