Sketch of the Week: Airport sketches

Here are bonus sketches that usually happens while traveling: sketching at airports! I went through three airports with various amounts of waiting times and time of day on the way to and from Urban Sketchers Symposium a few weeks ago. (The wonderful stamps on some of the pages are from fellow Symposium participant, John Wright - thanks, John!)

My home airport of Los Angeles International Airport (LAX): After standing in the check-in line for more than 30 minutes and sketching the people around me, I waited at a boarding area for a 2am flight. It was incredible to see this many people so late at night/early in the morning.

Stopovers in Panama City Tocumen International Airport (PTY):

This airport is jutting out onto the ocean, with city highrises behind it, and thick green forest and mountains beyond that - a very dramatic backdrop. I had a lot of waiting time, so I was able to settle myself into a corner of the food court area upstairs to sketch and paint this scene. I am using what I learned from the Sympsium workshop by drawing a thumbnail here.

Some of the passengers on my flight were super-tall men from Brazilian volleyball team. One of them kindly helped me by stowing my suitcase in an overhead bin with ease.

Las Americas Airport in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (SDQ):

I didn't have much time at this airport, so this is a view from the plane window. Even though I sketched an American Airlines plane, it reminds me of Domincan flags that also has red, white, and blue.
