Sketch of the Week: Life Painting Workshop

I got some practice drawing and painting live models recently. I tend to overwork my paintings with long poses, so I did a mix of quick sketches and painting from long poses. Of all the years I've been to life model workshops, this was the first time I painted a pregnant model.

I like this painting of the model that I did in a few minutes while she was checking her phone on her break better than the one above that I worked on for hours - that probably means I need to practice my painting techniques so that long paintings still keep the freshness of quick paintings! Of course I had to do a quick sketch of my fellow artists, too.

  1. Ah, that is so great to have a pregnant model. Your work is lovely as usual.

I think the challenge for you is that you are not detail-oriented when it comes to your own art. I mean you must be that way for your graphic design jobs, but your sketches are not about the details. And painting something for hours is about getting deep into the details. That's just not where your focus usually is.

  2. Ah, thanks Melissa! I think for me it's more about struggling with color and over-analyzing how to use it - and the hours passed before I even got to the details!

  3. Ah, I see. Some people really fear color. Start simple and big. I like what you did though.
