Day 3: Urban Sketching Symposium, Portland Oregon USA

I had a wonderful time sketching with fellow artists at Urban Sketching Symposium in July 2010. I drew so much that I decided to break up the posts into small chunks, which will be under "Urban Sketching Symposium" label here. More drawings from fellow sketchers at Urban Sketching Symposium are at their blog.

Day 3: getting a feel for the city - there are still a lot to see and sketch! Today is also the 28th World Wide Sketchcrawl Day.

I took Frank Ching's session on Urban Architecture at Saturday market. Getting perspective down on the spot is a challenge for me, so I've worked on this sketch carefully. Frank suggested that I add more people to give a sense of depth (foreground/middle ground/background), so after I got the linework done, I colored it at home. I was fighting the sketch in the beginning, but I'm pleased with how it turned out.

As the morning turned to noon, a group of people dressed up as pirates "on a prowl" showed up - so I had to sketch them! It was a great costume drawing exercise - my favorite pirate is the one with blue go-go boots.

In the afternoon, I had an Urban Color session with Jason Das. One of the fun exercises we did was to find a partner, do a line drawing, swap the drawing with your partner, and color your partner's drawing. This is my drawing colored by Seattle-area sketcher, Will Scales: I think he did a fantastic job!

  1. Fantastic! ... it's been so nice to relive that weekend through everyone's posts. Now that I have some time (sort of), I think I need to put up a couple more posts, myself.

  3. Nice work balancing the architecture with the action in the plaza.

The image Will colored looks great too. The solid colors work well with your lovely lines

  5. Shiho I'm loving your sketches. Sketches are so much more fun and interesting than finished work in my opinion. Would you be interested in guest blogging on mine as some point. It's something I've been thinking about.
