According to CNN article, Portland is rated #1 city for street food, while my hometown of Los Angeles ranks #2 - so I had to experience the Portland street food for myself to see how it compares to L.A.! The inaugural Urban Sketching Symposium happened to be in Portland, so I snuck out of one of the sessions a bit early to get a taste of the cart food.
The food carts in Portland are parked in certain lots throughout downtown, which makes it easier to find than food trucks in Los Angeles, where following the trucks on Twitter to track down their location is often necessary. Another difference I noticed is the time when the food is served - seems like Portland carts are open mainly for lunch and shut down by 7pm at night and closed on weekends, while food trucks in Los Angeles are part of a "scene" where they operate late into the night to feed the crowd who show up for concerts, gallery openings, and other after-work and Saturday events.
As for the food: I tried a waffle wrapped around a veggie sausage - a variation of a sandwich. My fellow sketching symposium participant Elizabeth kindly took the photo for evidence:
The waffle was fresh, though I think the sausage could have been spicier to complement the sweetness of the waffle. Overall, a good lunch - and I like the sketches I got out of the experience.

I really like these bright food carts. They're very inviting!
