My sketch was photographed by Gary Friedman for Los Angeles Times when I biked over to Sunset bridge to sketch the 405 freeway that was shut down this weekend for construction work. Other photos documenting the closure are at Los Angeles Times.
I thought this is a moment worth sketching since this is an amazing sight for those of us who live in L.A. - traffic on the 405 during weekday commute time normally looks like this:
People were warned to stay home this weekend to avoid "carmageddon" of massive congestion that would happen if every driver who tries to take shortcuts around the closed freeway clog up side streets. In truth, there were very few cars on the road since most people stayed close to home. I enjoyed riding my bicycle to take care of my errands for most of the weekend without having to dodge heavy traffic - this is a wake-up call for Los Angeles: we need better alternatives to driving on freeways to get around. And if/when we get a metro from downtown to Santa Monica, I'll be able to sketch while riding across town!

That's fantastic, both the sketch and getting posted on the LA Times site. I didn't think the situation would be as bad as predicted, mainly because the traffic is already totally screwed up and ridiculous each and every day already!
ReplyDeleteOoooh. How cool! Leave it to, Shiho to bring us a relevant sketch of the current happenings! Love this blog post and congrats on being photo'd by LA Times!
