I had an opportunity to take Color Concepts Workshop by Nathan Fowkes, and it was very helpful in learning to paint effectively. I also tried a technique new to me, too: painting with watercolor (like I usually do), but using kraft paper that is neutral oatmeal/brown color + flat brush + touch of white gouache for opacity. I like this approach because it keeps the benefit of watercolors (quick-drying transparent washes) and adding the advantage of using opaque white (for highlights and for mixing colors that can be laid down over transparent washes). Here is a 15-minute exercise from the class. It's far from perfect, but it's a good reminder of what I learned in the class, and to keep on practicing!

So glad you learned at bunch at Nathan's class. Is this a pirate? His mustache and earring make him look like it. Yes, this is very different from you. I look forward to seeing how you add this technique to your repertoire.
ReplyDeleteYup, it was a costume model dressed as a pirate. Painting it was fun and challenging at the same time!
