This sketch is more about noting a once-in-a-lifetime event for my memories rather than artistic achievement: this is as close as I got to see the space shuttle Endeavour. I had less than an hour to spare between my errands when the shuttle was scheduled to fly over, but I'm glad I still managed to rush to the top of the nearest parking structure when I heard a crowd of people cheering from the rooftop. The shuttle is being flown on top of a modified Boeing 747 with two jet escorts flying nearby, like large gray birds in the haze/smog.
It was magical to see a spaceship before my own eyes, and also a little sad to know that this was the last time the shuttles were in the air. The shuttle will settle into its permanent home in California Science Museum, so I will have to visit it again and sketch it up close.
