Sketch of the Week: Urban Sketching Workshop in Barcelona

I had a wonderful time taking the workshops at Urban Sketching Symposium, and visiting Barcelona for the first time with other artists and putting what I saw to paper really cemented the memories of this trip. More detailed notes and sketches are at my post on Urban Sketching Symposium blog. Following are not necessarily my best sketches or typical way I draw things, but I'm posting them here in a spirit of learning. There will be more sketches from my trip - stay tuned!

Location: Plaça Catalunya

This is a large plaza ringed by stores and businesses in a central location. People gather here like an "outdoor living room".

This sketch was drawn on location, colored on the plane ride home (not a good idea since the lighting was bad), and attempted to correct the color at home (with mixed results). I had to stop drawing the crowds and draw the man with lavender shirt and teal shorts before he walked off the page on this sketch, because American men on the street back home will never, ever wear those colors together - even here in California.

Location: Universitat de Barcelona

This university is housed in a historic building with graceful archways, which came in handy when our group was hit with an unexpected downpour (with thunder!).

Location: Barcelona Pavilion

This is a Modernist masterpiece built in 1929 by Mies Van der Rohe. It is indeed a beautiful building. And so hard to sketch.

This building looks simpler to draw compared to ornate buildings scattered all over Barcelona, but this structure is much longer than it looks, so I had to keep checking my drawing.

Location: In and around Plaça Reial in Barri Gòtic

Walking around the narrow passageways of Barri Gòtic is like being in a medieval canyon, looking up and ahead for light openings and the sky. I could've sketched there for hours.

Location: Església de Santa Anna

This church in Barri Gòtic has a small courtyard and the light strikes this building very clearly during midday.
